Day 16 of our #MilesInMemory took us across 18 miles of the stunning Leicestershire countryside,

from Barsby to Lubenham.

Our route led us past Baggrave Hall and the deserted medieval village of Baggrave, onward through Cold Newton, and over Sludge Hall Hill to the B6047 and Three Gates. From there we passed through Kibworth Harcourt,

over the A6 to Smeeton Westerby

and Gumley, before a diversion to Foxton Locks,

Britain’s longest staircase flight of canal locks 🍺.

Along the way, we enjoyed fields of sunflowers 🌻

the quirky Lubenham Scarecrow Festival,

and the company of friendly goats 🐐

and a playful 12-week-old puppy 🐶a small joy on a long, reflective journey.

But beneath the scenic countryside lies a sobering reality. Thousands of British soldiers deployed to Kenya, Sierra Leone, Belize, Brunei, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other malaria-endemic regions🌍 were issued Lariam (Mefloquine) through the G4 supply chain, often without proper prescription.

This “wonder drug” has been linked to nightmares, psychosis, suicide ideation, attempts, and tragic loss of life, yet these effects were frequently misdiagnosed as depressive disorder, military mental health issues, or PTSD.

📙Andrew Marriott’s book, If You Wake at Midnight: The Lariam Wonder Drug Scandal, exposes this preventable tragedy, shining a light on betrayal at the highest levels of government and the military. Professor David Healy calls it “a great candidate for inclusion on the recent list of Books on Medical Treatments Gone Wrong.”

Every step we take honours veterans lost, those still struggling, and families fighting for acknowledgment.

Thank you to everyone supporting the Lariam Tab, your help ensures these stories are never forgotten.
