Sergeant Alex Cairnie, 30, of the Queen’s Royal Hussars, went missing after leaving Tidworth Camp in Wiltshire on 6 July 2025. His disappearance prompted a large-scale search involving hundreds of people, including serving soldiers. On 8 July, police confirmed that his body had been found near Warren Hill

Aaron Sanson, 24, a former soldier from Boscombe, was found dead near the river at Tuckton in September 2018. Diagnosed with schizophrenia shortly after joining the Rifles, he was medically discharged from the Army. Despite being a devoted father to two young children, he struggled with mental illness and died by suicide

Danny Johnston PWRR (SRR)
Danny Johnston, a highly decorated veteran who served in 2nd Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment and later in the elite Special Reconnaissance Regiment, was found dead in woodland near Chichester in May 2018 after a four-day search. Despite his distinguished service supporting SAS operations abroad, he struggled silently with mental health issues following retirement.

Simon McGovern, 39, of the Royal Engineers, died by suicide in March 2016 after years of struggling. His partner, Andrea Tierney-Smith, later launched free haircut initiatives to support veterans facing similar battles.

Aaron Black SCOTS
Aaron Black, 22, a soldier with The Black Watch, died by suicide in December 2011 after struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder following his combat tour in Afghanistan. Discharged from the Army seven months earlier, he was found surrounded by his medals, photographs, and a crucifix—having sent a final message to his mother.

Lance Corporal Ryan Mackenzie was found dead at his barracks at Catterick Garrison on August 23, 2021. The 30-year-old had joined the army at the age of 18 and completed two tours of Afghanistan in 2011 and 2013.

Reece Miller
Private Reece Miller 29, was taking part in a rifle training exercise at the Tapa Barracks in Estonia when his fellow soldiers noticed him leave the firing range and slip into woodland. It was there he committed suicide with an automatic rifle in 2019

George Ellis YORKS
George Ellis, 24, died by suicide just a month after attending the funeral of his close friend Damon Hakin. Both had served in 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment and died within weeks of each other, underscoring the mental health crisis among veterans.

Damon Hakin, 25, from Doncaster was known as a cheerful, sociable character but had battled mental health issues for years before taking his own life in a Sydney hostel in February 2021.

Bombardier Ross Burnside, from Rotherham, died by suicide in July 2022 in a seaside town in Kent, weeks after the death of his girlfriend, Gunner Sophie Madden, 23. Both had served in 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and were described by loved ones as inseparable.

Gunner Sophie Madden, 23, of 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, died by suicide at Albemarle Barracks in Northumberland in June 2022.

Richard Gordon Franks
Richard Gordon Franks, 39, died by suicide in April 2019 while in custody at HMP Leeds, where he had a known history of PTSD and repeated self-harm.

Simon Jeffers RN
Leading Seaman Simon Jeffers, 45, died by suicide at HMS Drake in Plymouth on 6 January 2019. He had stayed on base over the festive period and was found in the en-suite shower of his cabin after concerns were raised by family. Jeffers had been receiving mental health support from the Royal Navy, following struggles with alcohol and suicidal thoughts.

Tom Beevers, 32, a former soldier of 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, died by suicide in Acomb Wood on New Year’s Eve 2021. After leaving the Army, he struggled to adjust to civilian life and battled mental health issues.

Lieutenant Commander Richard Smith, 38, a respected Royal Navy officer and devoted husband and father, died on 26 October 2023.

Joseph Berry PARA
Private Joseph Berry, 21, of A Company, 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment, died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the New Kabul compound on 22 February 2020. A coroner ruled his act “unexpected and impulsive,” noting there had been no prior warning

Major Wendy Blackmore (née Rose), 42, died suddenly on 22 October 2009 while serving as Chief of Staff at 1 Log Sp Gp in Grantham. Known for her warmth and leadership across postings in Hohne, UKSC(G), and the Royal Logistic Corps, she was deeply respected by colleagues.

Kieran Steven Heaney YORKS
Private Kieran Steven Heaney, 20, of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Yorkshire Regiment, was found dead in his Dale Barracks accommodation on 4 January 2024. Enlisting in September 2019, he provided force protection at the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus and deployed to Kabul in August 2021 during Operation Pitting, helping evacuate thousands; comrades remembered him for his bravery, reliability and upbeat spirit.

John Dick RM
John Dick, 38, a Royal Marine veteran from Bury St Edmunds, went missing in November 2020 and was confirmed dead in September 2021 after human remains were identified near Harwich Port.

David Penman SAS
David Penman, 56, a former SAS sergeant from Falkirk and Sir Billy Connolly’s bodyguard on the 2003 Comic Relief trip to Somalia, was found dead at his home in Thailand in July 2020. He had long battled PTSD, and had just published his memoir, Shooting Straight, days before his death.

Ben Riches
Kingsman Ben Riches, 30, from Garstang in Lancashire, joined the Army Foundation College at Harrogate at 16 before infantry training at Catterick. He served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, after which he exhibited signs of PTSD. Medically discharged in 2019, he struggled to access consistent mental health support and died by suicide later that year. His family’s experience helped shape the One Is Too Many study, highlighting urgent gaps in veteran care.

Zakaree McIlhiney, 29, a former Royal Marine commando born in Northampton and living in Plymouth, was found dead on the railway line between Laira depot and Moor View Road on 21 January 2023 after a train driver discovered his body.

George Du Preez PARA
Private George Du Preez, 37, a former British Parachute Regiment soldier born in Namibia, developed PTSD in Afghanistan in 2011. Medically discharged in 2014, his treatment stalled upon moving to Wales—leaving him on a therapy waiting list—until he died by suicide at home in November 2019

Gavin Briggs, 40, from Welwyn Garden City, died by suicide in Little Somborne, Hampshire, in July 2020 after his fiancée discovered he had concealed having a third child.

Steven Gary Morrell, 49, a British Army veteran who served with 2nd Field Regiment Royal Artillery during the 1991 Gulf War, died suddenly on 20 July 2021 after years battling PTSD and mental health challenges.

Mick Downworth
Mick Downworth, a former Combat Medic with 23 years of Army service—including deployments to Bosnia, Basra, Northern Ireland, Germany, and the UK—died in Northumberland after a long battle with PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Sergeant Nathan Shimwell, 33, a Royal Engineer who once worked with tanks in Bovington, was found dead in his Swinton Barracks room on 24 July 2017 after struggling with depression.

Paul Corlett
Corporal Paul Corlett, 49, a British Army veteran from Marton, served 24 years in the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Haunted by traumatic memories and reluctant to share his struggles, he died by suicide at home on 28 June 2018.

Sergeant Matthew Slater, 33, of 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment (The Vikings), died from a suspected suicide in early May 2021 after multiple tours in Afghanistan.

Kyle Robertson SCOTS
Highlander Kyle Robertson, 28, of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, died by suicide on 5 May 2021 at a friend’s house in Scotland. After being shot in the shoulder by a Taliban gunman during his 2012 deployment to Afghanistan, his mother said he returned a changed man, battling anxiety, depression, and financial hardship following job loss.

Deane Hart RE
Deane Hart, 53, a Northern Ireland veteran and former Royal Engineers physical training instructor, died by suspected suicide in May 2021. A well-known figure in Kidderminster for his fitness business, Hart once reached the semi-finals on ITV’s Gladiators in 1993. His death was among seven suspected soldier suicides within a 15-day span, prompting renewed calls for government accountability in veterans’ mental health care.

Sergeant James Byrne, 29, an Army sniper from West Yorkshire serving with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was found dead in May 2021 after being reported missing. He had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his death, suspected to be suicide, occurred during a 15-day period that saw multiple soldier fatalities, prompting national concern over mental health support.

Elaine “Lainey” Hendry, 42, a former Army combat medic from Port Glasgow, died by suicide on 7 December 2022. Known for her unbreakable spirit and global humanitarian impact, she served in Afghanistan and was deeply loved by her community.

Michael “Fergy” Gask, 43, a retired Royal Marines sergeant from Hawkhurst, Kent, died by suicide on 15 December 2019 after abruptly leaving a party in distress. Despite telling his wife he was receiving PTSD counselling, he had not been formally diagnosed. Following 18 years of service—including deployments to Northern Ireland, Iraq, and Afghanistan

James Holloway RM
Royal Marine Commando James Holloway, 25, of 42 Commando based at RM Bickleigh, died from a gunshot wound aboard RFA Fort Rosalie in Dubai on 29 October 2017. Found on the bridge by a fellow Marine, his death followed a recent breakup with his girlfriend. Despite no recorded mental health history, witnesses noted he appeared withdrawn and distressed in the days leading up to his passing.

Drew Howe
Drew Howe, 26, a British Army veteran from Stockport, died by suicide in October 2022 in the trailer of his HGV lorry on the A18 in Lincolnshire. Despite his lively persona and hopes of becoming a transport manager, he struggled with undiagnosed mental health conditions following a breakdown during service. He had sought help multiple times but was repeatedly referred between services, with a specialist assessment pending at the time of his death.

Andrew “Andy” Haldane RAMC
Lieutenant Colonel Andrew “Andy” Haldane, 45, a consultant anaesthetist and Army medic from Droitwich, died by suicide in June 2022 after years of high-pressure service in both the NHS and military. He served on the Covid emergency rota at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital and flew missions to retrieve Special Forces from combat zones. Despite no formal mental health diagnoses, his wife believed he was suffering from PTSD, depression, or burnout, citing 50 untaken leave days and changes in behaviour. He was found in his car in Abberley, Worcestershire, two days after being reported missing.

Sergeant Gordon Adam, 35, of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, died by suicide in July 2019. A devoted father of four, he was known for his humour, warmth, and dedication to comradeship. Gordon had been planning a marathon for Samaritans in honour of friends lost to suicide, and joined the Army in 2006 after a formative trek along the West Highland Way.

Marc Rhoddan, 28, a former infantry soldier with 2 SCOTS (Royal Highland Fusiliers) of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, was found dead in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, in October 2018, shortly after his birthday. His death, believed to be suicide, prompted renewed outcry over inadequate veteran support, with friends describing him as a valued comrade and a “great guy”

Adam Simcock
Adam Simcock, 44, a former infantry soldier turned devoted father, died by suicide in May 2022 after years of battling trauma from his early 20s deployments on Ulster patrols. He joined the Army at 19, where intense exposure to sectarian violence left him emotionally scarred and later compounded by family pressures and limited mental health support.

Deborah “Debs” McGuinness, 49, a former Army personal assistant to three successive Chiefs of the General Staff, died by suicide alongside her husband, ex-soldier Peter McGuinness, when they carbon monoxide–poisoned themselves in a hired Land Rover at Durlston Country Park, Dorset.

Peter McGuinness, 54, a former Royal Regiment of Fusiliers soldier who left the Army in 2007 after more than 20 years’ service, died by suicide alongside his wife Deborah in a rented Land Rover at Durlston Country Park, Dorset. He had struggled with anxiety, depression and possible PTSD following tours in Iraq, and the couple engineered their deaths with carbon monoxide poisoning after hosting a final party, leaving a note declaring that neither could live without the other.

Corporal Barry Wright, 37, of the First Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and originally from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was found dead by suicide in his Tidworth barracks room on 24 November 2020. He had been placed on the Army’s vulnerable register in August amid financial, occupational and marital pressures and was prescribed antidepressants, though he later declined further support.

Nicholas Hart, 33, a Royal Regiment of Scotland soldier in a recruitment role, was found dead at Catterick Garrison on 5 February 2022. He had developed PTSD after a 2012 Afghanistan tour and turned to heavy drinking following the suicide of fellow soldier Ryan Mackenzie.

Craig McMeechan, 27, a former Army paratrooper and alumnus of Stirling High School and Forth Valley College, died by suicide in February 2020 as part of a cluster of 14 veteran deaths over two months.

Eddie Murphy RHF
Eddie “Spud” Murphy, 50, a former 1st Battalion Royal Highland Fusiliers soldier from Inverness, died by suicide in February 2020. Injured by an IRA bomb during his Ulster tour and under investigation over his Northern Ireland service, the father of three was found dead by his wife.

Royal Artillery Gunner Jaysley Louise Beck, 19, was found dead at Larkhill Camp in Wiltshire in December 2021. An Army service inquiry found that two months of relentless sexual harassment—and an earlier unwanted sexual assault—by her immediate superior was almost certainly a causal factor in her suicide, prompting renewed calls for stronger reporting processes and support for harassment victims in the armed forces.

Former Royal Artillery soldier Dane McGill, 53, from Dalswinton, Dumfriesshire, was found dead in January 2024 following a two-month search after his disappearance on 10 November. His death, which is not believed to be suspicious, prompted a major search effort led by fellow veterans and community members, many of whom had served with him. McGill was part of the Fire Mission community for retired veterans.

Private Joshua Kennington, 18, of the Royal Logistic Corps, died on 24 November 2022 following a non-operational incident at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire.

Brett Savage R IRISH
Brett Savage, 32, an Army veteran of the Royal Irish Regiment, died by suicide at his home in Newtownards in 2020. Despite voicing concerns about inadequate post-service mental health support, he struggled with severe PTSD and felt abandoned by the Ministry of Defence.

Ben Tudhope RRF
Lance Corporal Ben Tudhope, 29, of the Royal Fusiliers, died by suicide on 29 August 2021. His sister Libby later launched a fundraising campaign in his memory for Head Up Charity, aiming to support mental health in the armed forces. Ben was remembered as a dedicated soldier and close friend of Fusilier Sam Brownridge, who also died by suicide in 2020

Fusilier Sam Brownridge, 23, of the First Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, died by suicide on 5 July 2020 during a NATO deployment in Estonia. He was found hanged near the play area of the Lavendel Spa Hotel after a night out in Tallinn

Luke Leventhal, 25, a former Solider, died by suicide in April 2009 after years of struggling with depression and multiple prior attempts.

Sergeant Catherine McGovern, an Afghanistan veteran with 22 years of RAF service, died by suicide on 7 October 2018. Her death was part of a surge in suspected suicides that year among serving personnel, reflecting growing concern over mental health in the armed forces.

Kingsman Jordan Corcoran, 28, died by suicide in 2018 during his service with the British Army. His death formed part of a wider surge in suspected suicides among serving personnel that year, prompting renewed attention to military mental health challenges.

Dan Collins WG
Lance Sergeant Dan Collins, 29, a Welsh Guardsman who served in Afghanistan during Operation Panther’s Claw, died by suicide on 1 January 2012 after struggling with PTSD. Despite surviving multiple traumatic incidents and receiving treatment, he was declared fit to return to duty. His condition worsened, leading to two prior attempts and eventual suicide in the Preseli Mountains, where he recorded a farewell video before hanging himself

Warrant Officer Robert “Rab” McAvoy, 39, of the Royal Engineers, died by suicide in March 2019 near Dorchester, Dorset. After four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he experienced PTSD but declined ongoing support fearing it would harm his career progression.

Steven Squire, 33, a former Royal Engineers soldier from Glenrothes, died by suicide in September 2020. He was reported missing a week prior and later found deceased. Known for his gentle nature and devotion as a husband and father, Steven’s death shocked his community and spurred calls to address the suicide epidemic among veterans.

Corporal Tony Sutcliffe, 44, a Royal Marines veteran of 40 Commando, died by suicide on 12 April 2019 after a prolonged struggle with PTSD linked to his military service.His death deeply affected his family, with Lyra receiving ongoing emotional support from Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

Major General Matthew “Trevor” Holmes CBE DSO, 54, former head of the Royal Marines, died by suicide on 2 October 2021 at his home in Winchester. His death followed intense personal and professional stress, including the forced end of his command role, marital separation, and emotional turmoil over the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Stu McBrearty RM
Stu McBrearty, 39, a former Royal Marine from Aldershot, died by suicide in Kabul in October 2019 while working as a close protection officer. His death followed years of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, compounded by the loss of a close friend in a Taliban attack. An inquest confirmed he was suffering from PTSD and intoxicated at the time of death.

Lance Corporal Simon Hosell, of ‘C’ Squadron, The Queen’s Royal Hussars, died on 29 December 2023. A respected Challenger 2 tank gunner, he served in Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Wales over a three-year military career. Widely praised for his cheerful resilience and professionalism, he was recently promoted before his sudden death, which deeply affected his regiment and prompted heartfelt tributes.

Staff Sergeant Josateki Kautani Matasere, a respected soldier from Fiji serving with the British Army, died on 3 July 2024. Known for his leadership, humility, and dedication, he served multiple overseas deployments including Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Kenya, and Estonia.

Private Apisalome Rawaidranu, a member of the 1st Battalion, Royal Yorkshire Regiment, died in early 2024. His passing was acknowledged alongside other sudden deaths in the regiment.

Trooper Ben Healy, 20, of the Light Dragoons cavalry regiment based at Catterick Garrison, died suddenly on 26 January 2020 in a wooded area near Olaman Walk, Peterlee. Widely respected by C Squadron and the regiment, his funeral was held at Our Lady of the Rosary Church with tributes highlighting his character and dedication.

Thomas Thacker, 34, a veteran of the Parachute Regiment who served in Afghanistan, died by suicide on 15 September 2022 at his home in Leek, Staffordshire.

Lieutenant Colonel Brett Webster, 47, of 16 Medical Regiment (Royal Army Medical Corps), died by suicide at his home in Yarm, North Yorkshire, in July 2022. After deployments to Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and South Sudan, he battled insomnia, night terrors and guilt over a battlefield injury.

Shane Underdown, 32, a former Princess of Wales’s Regiment soldier turned care support worker in Tunbridge Wells, died by suicide on 4 September 2019, found hanged in a wooded area at the Aspens Charities adventure playground. He left a note pleading with his estranged wife to surround their two children with love.

Rhys Benjamin Shearan, a Royal Navy sailor, took his life on 18 July 2019. His obituary on Funeral-Guide records tributes from family and friends, who remembered his warm spirit and dedication to service.

Sergeant Paul Hills, in his early 40s with 20 years in the RAF fire service and two tours in Afghanistan, died by He died by suicide at his home on the RAF Manston base in Kent in April 2020.

Owen Wason RM
Owen Wason, 26, a Royal Marine with 45 Commando, died by suicide in October 2016 at his Darlington flat. He joined straight from school at 18, serving in Afghanistan’s Upper Sangin Valley where he cleared improvised bombs and witnessed eight comrades killed by the Taliban. He battled PTSD in private, and his girlfriend found him hanged.

Alan Forcer, 40, a former lance corporal in the Coldstream Guards, died by suicide in May 2020 after walking his dog near his home in Hartlepool, County Durham. His planned therapy was abruptly cancelled due to government funding cuts, leaving him feeling abandoned.

Corporal Alex Browne, 36, of the Royal Irish Regiment, died by suicide on 11 July 2020. A Northern Ireland native who enlisted in 2000, he completed multiple tours, including Iraq and Afghanistan, and was widely mourned by his regiment for his commitment and character. His passing renewed calls for enhanced mental-health support for veterans.

Lance Corporal Bernard Mongan, 33, of the Royal Signals (& former Irish Guards) was found dead in his room at Catterick Garrison on 23 January 2020 after being missing for three weeks. An inquest heard he endured aggressive bullying by senior officers—being publicly shouted at, forced into extra duties without breaks, and degraded—and had a history of suicide attempts and PTSD treatment at Help for Heroes.

Anthony Haley, 41, a South West Water employee from St Austell, Cornwall, died by suicide after false Facebook claims that he was a paedophile. He went missing on 22 September 2021—having told colleagues his partner had a seizure—and his body was found in Pentewan Woods on 30 September.

Captain Christopher Butcher, 35, of the Royal Artillery, died suddenly on 16 October 2017 at his family home in Bawdsey, Suffolk. Having served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he struggled with post‐traumatic stress disorder and substance misuse following his return. A coroner attributed his death to an abnormal enlargement of the heart of uncertain origin compounded by the effects of drugs against a background of PTSD.

In July 2010, 26-year-old former soldier Chris Cowan, employed at Heysham Power Station, took his life falling 30 feet from a balcony.

His body was found on 15 November in woodland near Helmeth Hill; a post-mortem showed a self-inflicted wound that would have caused severe blood loss.

Michael Paul Anthony Worsley, 69, a former SAS soldier, went missing from his Withington home on 18 January and was found in a nearby field on 22 January with self-inflicted wounds and massive blood loss. He had long suffered insomnia, depression, PTSD and alcoholism, and after admitting suicide plans at A&E was deemed not to require admission.

Pex later rebuilt his life through faith and charity, but ultimately died by suicide following years of struggle.

He had been sofa-surfing and saw multiple support appointments cancelled, feeling let down by the agencies charged with his care. His loss highlights the urgent need for dedicated, reliable support for veterans.

Wesley McDonnell, 35, a Platoon Sergeant in the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment who served tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Cyprus, Kenya, Canada, Germany and the Falkland Islands, died by his own hand on 26 January 2020. He was found in a children’s play area at Queen’s Park, St Helens, after suffering post-traumatic stress disorder.

Known for his advocacy of mental health, he was a founding member of Lads Advice, a peer support group for men to seek help and offer support. He was instrumental in fundraising for suicide prevention charity Papyrus and deeply valued showing up for one another.

Lance Corporal Taylor Raymond Cole Aged 21, Taylor served with the 3rd Division Signals Regiment. He was found hanged in his room at Bulford Barracks on 26 January 2023 after failing to attend a meeting. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Rob was known for his humour, compassion, and loyalty. He battled severe PTSD and was found deceased in August 2025 after repeatedly seeking help.
